During his journey over the south of France, Thomas Jefferson paused on his way to Nimes to see the Pont du Gard where it crossed the Gardon river on March 19, 1787. Constructed by  Agrippa in 19 BC , it could carry forty-four million gallons of water per day. The Romans built  it without mortar, instead it is held together with iron clamps.
This piece  was painted in the renaissance manner beginning with a gray underpainting to separate the problems of form from the problems of color. With the underpainting complete, color was slowly glazed on and built up in layers.
This oil on canvas measures 36 by 46 inches, and a frame size of 42 by 52 inches.
