The Welcome was constructed near Fort Michilimackinac in 1775 by John Askin for his successful fur trading enterprise. In 1779 the sloop was purchased by the British military to
supply the fort and help move the fort and community to Mackinac Island. The Revolutionary War was not going well in the Illinois country for the British because of the victories of General George Rogers Clark, and far to the north at the immensely valuable straits it was felt the fort would be more immune to attack if it was rebuilt on the island.
During 1780 and 81' the Welcome made many journeys from the old fort to the island, and time ended her career sometime after 1782.
This oil on canvas measures 24 by 36 inches. The frame, hand made by the artist, measures 30 by 42. It is the original of one of our series of prints. Please contact us for details.
